The Computer Science Department was formally created in March 1996 within the Faculty of Science. However, the area has been represented in the Faculty since 1985.

Currently, the Department integrates 10 lecturers and has a students' population of around 240 undergraduate students, 12 MSc students and 15 Ph.D. students. All members of the Department carry out their research activities within the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science (LIACC). This laboratory also integrates two other research groups from the Economics and Engineering Faculties. Recently , the research activities of this laboratory were evaluated as Excellent by an independent panel of international researchers.

The main areas of competence within the department are (following the classification of the ACM Computing Reviews, 1991):

• Computer Architecture: processor architecture, communication networks, distributed systems, performance evaluation.
• Software Development: programming methods, programming languages, operating systems.
• data: data structures, data storage methods, data security and encryption, data bases.
• Theory of Computation: automata, analysis of algorithms and complexity, logic and semantics, mathematical logic and formal languages.
• Computational Mathematics: discrete mathematics.
• Information Systems: database management systems, interfaces.
• Computational Methodologies: artificial intelligence, graphical computing, simulation, text processing.
