I. About the Area Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery (KDubiq1) What do we mean by Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery (KDubiq1)? 1.) KDubiq 1 : KDubiq stays for the new research area 'Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery'. The name is meaning symbolically that the 'ubiquitous' dimension of data will potentiate the Knowledge Discovery process as a whole. The KDubiq community believes that there is a new, emerging research and application area called Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery. This is a highly interdisciplinary area that will include research done under Machine Learning, Data Mining, Embedded Systems, Cognitive Modelling. (zeichnung) What do you mean by the abbreviation 'ubiq' ? Ubiq stands for ubiquitous and means information that is available anytime, everywhere by every device. II. About the Project KDubiq-CA What is KDubiq? 1.) KDubiq 1 : KDubiq stays for the new research area 'Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery'. The name is meaning symbolically that the 'ubiquitous' dimension of data will potentiate the Knowledge Discovery process as a whole. More under 1.1. 2.) KDubiq-CA (or KDubiq 2): KDubiq is the Acronym of the EU-funded project called 'KDubiq = Knowledge Discovery in Ubiquitous Environments' (www.kdubiq.org ). The type of this project is a Coordination Action (CA) under the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union under IST (Information Society Technology) Unit called FET Open (Future and Emerging Technologies) Subunit. The KDubiq project has started in Dec. 2005 and will last until June 2008. The European Union is supporting a Consortium of European Institutions to fund activities (e.g. workshops, meetings, conferences, summer schools, etc.) and define research exchange programmes that will help to build an infrastructure for a new 'emerging' research area called 'Ubiquitous Knowledge Discovery'. What are the objectives of KDubiq? The objectives or KDubiq are: to provide a common perspective by coordinating relevant research done on learning from experience in many subfields. People who become members are from different communities, from industry, companies or research institutions. They have all a common goal, setting up a long term research agenda for ubiquitous knowledge discovery with special focus to industry research and transfer of research results to industry applications. Who is responsible for the coordination of the KDubiq project ? The coordinator of KDubiq are Michael May and Codrina Lauth from Fraunhofer Institute of Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems. What is the role of the Administrative Board ? The Administrative Board is a Consortium of 8 Partner Institutions that have signed the EU Contract Agreement with the European Union. These 8 Institutions are formally responsible for the KDubiq CA project and only THEY have the final decisions in financial and administrative matters. Who is in the KDubiq Management Board ? What are the project goals? The project goals are to bring together the two major challenges of highly distributed and mobile systems and advanced knowledge discovery systems. For building these intelligent ubiquitous knowledge discovery systems a homogeneous platform has been developed. Why should I become a KDubiq Member?
